Building an Addition

When the heart expands and adds a new room, there is nothing you can do to shrink it again. Each new experience, every emotion stretches the heart into a new shape, as if it were an elastic sack and new objects were being placed inside. But the heart will never shrink--never forget--never go back to the way it was before. When you love something the house of your heart gets straight to work building that something a room of its own. And perhaps you can evict that something from your heart, but the space will always be there. Nothing will ever replace the room even if it is filled in by a new object. The heart will never forget. Maybe you can just let the love die, fester and rot away--letting the room fill with cobwebs and dust, but maybe, just maybe that is not the best option. It might be best to just give the room away. But one thing is for certain, to demolish the heart and start anew would be terrible. Though the pain of the empty room is great, there is still much good living in the heart.
When you build a new addition, you can not just go back again. The old you is gone, but preserved, forever a part of who you are and who you are becoming. The old you is evident in the layout of the rooms of your heart.
