If you ask most people what the American dream is, they will respond with something along the lines of "a house with a white picket fence where my loved ones and I can all settle down".
I once asked some people what their American dream is and these are some of the answers I got:
"Well, I guess I just want the white picket fence."
"To reach my goals and retire. To just do the things I love."
"To live with no regrets."
"To be remembered."
"To make a difference. You know, to change the world one person at a time."
I just wonder, do we even know why we want what we want? What about the picket fence is drawing us in? Could it be the security? The stability? Could it be that it's just what we've been told to want?
So we know what we want, but I don't think that is enough. We must examine why we want these things. In light of our motivations, I think we may find that we have been looking in all the wrong places.
