I recently read Northanger Abbey by Jane Austin. As her, arguably, first novel it has the distinction of a more Gothic nature than her other novels. However, this Gothic nature is quite exaggerated and mocked.
Personally, I cannot stand the style and it is worsened by the parody. The characters are inclined to extreme reactions to every stimulus. Should a character fail to be present at a social event the heroine nearly falls into shambles. And one compliment will turn even the most abysmal evening into the absolute best evening anyone on the planet has ever had the pleasure of living through. There is no middle ground for the characters. And it drives me crazy.
reflecting on this brought me to an odd conclusion. I have an extreme emotional response to all of these extreme emotional responses because I live through this daily. There are those in my daily life, and I even confess to be among them, who feel the need to have an opinion on absolutely everything. And not just any opinion, a rather strong and pronounced one. It just seems like dramatics to me. A plea for attention and a feeble attempt to prove importance.
Sometimes, silence is golden. It's better to just express what you know or ask questions to learn more. I don't need to pretend to know everything. I don't need to have knee-jerk, extreme reactions just to have an opinion.
